Bomb defuses in CS2 Retakes can now finish instantly when enough time remains and no active utility can prevent the defuse. Valve’s latest update also shortens freeze time and the delay before another Retakes round begins. The instant defuse change is specific to Retakes.
If a bomb suddenly finishes defusing faster than you expected, this update explains why. Here’s what changed, what the conditions mean, and what you should keep in mind before your next session.

When does an instant defuse happen in Retakes?
Valve names 2 requirements:
- Enough time must remain in the round.
- No active utility can remain that would prevent the defuse.
Both conditions matter. Starting a defuse does not automatically mean it will finish immediately.
However, the patch notes leave some details open. Valve hasn’t published the exact time threshold or a complete explanation of how the game evaluates active utility. Treat precise claims about those checks cautiously unless they come with reproducible testing.
For players, the sensible approach is to keep clearing the site and checking the bomb before committing. Don’t build your next clutch around an assumption about when the shortcut will activate.
If you need a refresher on the underlying mechanic, our CS2 bomb defusal guide covers the basics.
What else changed in Retakes?
The update targets 3 separate waits:
| Part of the round | Change |
|---|---|
| Defusing the bomb | Can finish instantly under the required conditions |
| Freeze time | Reduced |
| Round restart delay | Reduced |
Valve hasn’t provided the new freeze time or restart delay values.
Our take: the useful improvement is getting back into another scenario sooner. During practice, use each new round to work on something specific, such as checking an overlooked angle, communicating your entry, or staying close enough to trade a teammate.
Our Retake Servers guide covers the broader practice side.
Does instant defusing work in Premier or Competitive?
This patch does not announce instant defuses for Premier or Competitive. Valve specifically lists the change under Retakes, so it shouldn’t be read as a universal change to bomb defusal.
Also, distinguish Valve’s mode from a privately operated Retakes server. Community servers can use their own plugins and rules, so their behaviour may differ. Our CS2 community servers guide explains how those servers work.
Pet chickens and map scripting also received changes
Pinging a pet chicken during freeze time now requests a trick. Chicken names are also hidden when the option to hide customized item text is enabled. If you’re still getting started with pets, see our CS2 Chicken Egg guide.
For map creators, Valve added entity spawning tools and bot control functions, alongside changes to existing scripting methods. Our earlier CS2 map scripting explainer provides background on this side of custom content.
