Butterfly Knives can come from five official CS2 cases: Operation Breakout Weapon Case, Spectrum Case, Spectrum 2 Case, Operation Riptide Case and Dreams & Nightmares Case.
They do not all contain the same Butterfly skins. Breakout has the original finishes, the Spectrum pair has Chroma finishes, and Riptide shares its Gamma finishes with Dreams & Nightmares.
Before buying a case, decide which finish you want. That choice matters more than the age of the case or how expensive it looks.

All five Butterfly Knife cases compared
| CS2 case | Butterfly finishes | What else can occupy the rare knife slot? |
|---|---|---|
| Operation Breakout Weapon Case | Original finishes, including Fade, Slaughter and Case Hardened | No other knife model |
| Spectrum Case | Chroma finishes, including Doppler, Marble Fade and Tiger Tooth | Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman or Shadow Daggers |
| Spectrum 2 Case | Same Butterfly finishes as Spectrum | Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman or Shadow Daggers |
| Operation Riptide Case | Gamma finishes, including Gamma Doppler, Lore and Autotronic | Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman or Shadow Daggers |
| Dreams & Nightmares Case | Same Butterfly finishes as Operation Riptide | Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman or Shadow Daggers |
These knives appear as the gold Rare Special Item result. Our CS2 skin rarity guide explains how that differs from a red Covert weapon skin.
None of these cases guarantees a knife from an ordinary opening. Breakout guarantees the Butterfly model only when the result is a rare special item.
What makes each Butterfly Knife case different?
Operation Breakout Weapon Case

Breakout is the original Butterfly case, introduced on July 1, 2014. It is the case to check for Butterfly Vanilla, Fade, Slaughter, Crimson Web or Case Hardened.
Its main advantage is the narrow knife pool. If you receive a knife, there is no chance of another model taking the Butterfly’s place. However, you cannot choose its finish, wear or pattern.
For a Case Hardened purchase, inspect the actual item rather than judging it by the skin name. Our CS2 pattern index guide explains how paint seeds change the visible pattern.
Spectrum Case

Released on March 15, 2017, Spectrum added Chroma finishes to the second generation of knives.
For Butterfly buyers, that means Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Damascus Steel, Rust Coat and Ultraviolet. The regular Doppler family includes Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl variants.
Spectrum can also give you four other knife models. Being eligible for a Butterfly Doppler does not make every gold result one.
Spectrum 2 Case

Spectrum 2 arrived on September 14, 2017. It contains the same Butterfly finish options and knife models as Spectrum, with a different selection of regular weapon skins.
That makes the comparison straightforward: check the price of both cases and whether you prefer either weapon collection. Spectrum 2 does not unlock an additional Butterfly finish.
Operation Riptide Case

Operation Riptide launched on September 21, 2021, bringing Gamma finishes to these knife models.
Its Butterfly options are Gamma Doppler, Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Freehand and Bright Water. Emerald is a Gamma Doppler variant, so Riptide is one of the two official case options for a Butterfly Emerald.
Dreams & Nightmares Case

Released on January 20, 2022, Dreams & Nightmares carried over Riptide’s rare knife pool. Valve explicitly confirmed that relationship in its release announcement.
You can receive the same Butterfly finishes from either case. Choosing Riptide instead does not add an exclusive Butterfly skin.

Full Butterfly finish list by case
| Cases | Available Butterfly finishes |
|---|---|
| Operation Breakout | Vanilla, Blue Steel, Boreal Forest, Case Hardened, Crimson Web, Fade, Forest DDPAT, Night, Safari Mesh, Scorched, Slaughter, Stained, Urban Masked |
| Spectrum and Spectrum 2 | Damascus Steel, Doppler, Marble Fade, Rust Coat, Tiger Tooth, Ultraviolet |
| Operation Riptide and Dreams & Nightmares | Autotronic, Black Laminate, Bright Water, Freehand, Gamma Doppler, Lore |
Doppler and Gamma Doppler include different phases and gem variants. Fade and Marble Fade are also separate finishes: Fade belongs to Breakout; Marble Fade belongs to the Spectrum cases.
Which case is the best choice for a Butterfly Knife?
The answer depends on the skin you are chasing.
Then calculate the complete opening cost:
For an original finish, Breakout is your only case option. For a Chroma finish, compare Spectrum against Spectrum 2. For a Gamma finish, compare Riptide against Dreams & Nightmares.
Case price + matching in-game key price = cost per opening.
For example, a hypothetical $2 case with a $2.50 key costs $4.50 to open. Twenty openings would cost $90 before considering what the resulting items are worth. These are example figures, not current market prices.

What are the odds of getting a Butterfly Knife?
The official Chinese Counter-Strike probability disclosure lists a 0.256% chance of a rare special item from a standard keyed weapon case. This is often rounded to 0.26%.
For Breakout, every rare special item is a Butterfly Knife. For the four shared-pool cases, that rare item could be another knife model. The published gold rate therefore should not be presented as the Butterfly-specific chance for every case.
There is also no fixed number of openings that guarantees a knife.
Using the published rate and independent openings, 100 Breakout openings give approximately a 22.6% chance of at least one Butterfly Knife. That still leaves roughly a 77.4% chance of getting none.
This is a probability calculation, not a result from personal case-opening tests. It also does not calculate the chance of one particular finish or pattern.
Can you trade up to a Butterfly Knife instead?
Yes. Valve expanded Trade Up Contracts on October 22, 2025:
- Five regular Covert items can produce a regular knife or gloves from an eligible input collection.
- Five StatTrak Covert items can produce a StatTrak knife from an eligible input collection.
With five eligible Breakout Covert inputs, the knife model is restricted to Butterfly. Its finish remains an outcome you cannot select.
Mixing collections changes the possible rewards. Check our CS2 knife trade-up guide and Covert-to-knife trade-up odds before buying materials. A guaranteed model does not guarantee profit.
What if you want one exact Butterfly Knife?
Buying the exact item lets you choose the finish and inspect its condition before committing.
Compare the asking price with your full opening or trade-up budget. Our cheapest CS2 knife guide covers lower-cost alternatives if a Butterfly is outside your budget.
Check the float and wear and preview the item on a CS2 skin inspect server where possible. If you are building a complete loadout, compare knife and glove combinations before spending everything on the knife.
