StatTrak in CS2 is a special item variant that tracks your kills with that specific weapon. Guns display a digital counter, while knives have the number etched into the blade. StatTrak changes the cosmetic item, not its damage, accuracy or recoil.
The important catch: the counter belongs to your time with that item. Buying a used StatTrak skin does not give you the previous owner’s kills.
StatTrak vs Normal Skins
A StatTrak AK-47 and a normal AK-47 with the same finish behave the same in a match. You are paying for the counter and the item’s market appeal.
| Feature | Normal skin | StatTrak skin |
|---|---|---|
| Tracks your kills | No | Yes |
| Changes weapon performance | No | No |
| Has a float value and exterior | Yes | Yes |
| Counter survives a sale or trade | Not applicable | No |
| Can use the StatTrak Swap Tool | No | Yes, with a compatible StatTrak item |
StatTrak is also separate from CS2 skin rarity. A Restricted skin can have a StatTrak version without becoming Classified or Covert.
How Does StatTrak Count Kills?
A StatTrak weapon records kills you make against human players while using that particular item. Bot kills do not count. Virus – Steam Community Market
Say you own a StatTrak AK-47 | Redline. Kills with that Redline increase its counter. Kills with your AWP, a different AK skin or a teammate’s dropped weapon do not add to your Redline’s total.
Another player picking up your gun does not build your counter for you, either.
This makes StatTrak a record of using one item. It is not your account’s total kill count, your match score or a measure of your rank.

Does StatTrak Reset When You Sell or Trade?
Yes. A StatTrak weapon’s kill count resets when it is traded or sold through the Steam Community Market.
If you receive a skin that previously had 10,000 kills, you start your own count. Those 10,000 kills are not a collectible stat that transfers with the sale.
Dropping your weapon during a round is different. Another player picking it up in the match does not transfer inventory ownership or wipe your saved counter.
If keeping your number matters, move it to another compatible item with a Swap Tool before trading the old skin away. Our CS2 skin trading guide covers the wider trading process.
Can You Add StatTrak to a Normal Skin?
No. You cannot attach a StatTrak counter to a regular skin. The item must already be a StatTrak variant.
A Swap Tool does not convert normal items into StatTrak items. Applying stickers or changing the weapon’s name does not convert it, either.
Before buying, check that the listing explicitly says StatTrak™. Two skins can share the same weapon, finish and exterior while only one has a counter.
How Does the StatTrak Swap Tool Work?
The StatTrak Swap Tool is a single-use item that exchanges the counters between two compatible StatTrak weapons you own.
Both must be the same weapon type. You can swap between two StatTrak AK-47 skins with different finishes. You cannot swap an AK-47 counter onto an AWP, or an M4A4 counter onto an M4A1-S. StatTrak Swap Tool
Here is an example:
| Item | Before the swap | After the swap |
|---|---|---|
| Your old StatTrak AK-47 | 4,500 kills | 20 kills |
| Your new StatTrak AK-47 | 20 kills | 4,500 kills |
The tool swaps the numbers. It does not add them together. Neither skin ends up with 4,520 kills, and the tool is consumed after use.
Keep both items in your inventory until the swap is complete. Steam Community Market
How Do You Get StatTrak Skins?
You can buy a specific StatTrak skin on the Steam Community Market, trade for one, receive one from a case that offers StatTrak variants, or obtain one through an eligible StatTrak trade-up contract.
For contracts, regular and StatTrak inputs are separate. Check the current CS2 trade-up rules before buying materials. Steam Community Market
If you want one exact finish, buying that item lets you choose what you receive. Opening a case gives a random result.
Is StatTrak Worth It?
StatTrak is worth considering if you enjoy keeping a kill count on a weapon you use regularly. The appeal is personal: a favourite rifle can carry a number you have built over months of playing.
It often costs more than the normal version, but there is no fixed StatTrak price multiplier. Compare the same finish and exterior, then check the individual item.
For example, a cleaner normal skin might suit your budget better than a more worn StatTrak copy. Neither choice improves how the weapon shoots.
Use our float and wear guide to understand condition, and inspect skins before buying to see whether you like the counter’s position on the weapon.
Choose the version you will enjoy using. A StatTrak label alone does not guarantee a higher resale price or future profit.
Do StatTrak Music Kits Count Kills?
No. StatTrak music kits track Official Competitive MVPs instead of weapon kills. The statistic depends on the item type. Steam Community Market
Can Rented CS2 Skins Have StatTrak?
No. Valve’s official weapon rental system does not provide StatTrak weapons. Our CS2 skin rental guide explains what rentals include.
