CS2 Chicken Feed: How to Get It & Keep Your Pet Alive

If you just got a Chicken Egg in CS2, there’s something else you need to know about: Chicken Feed.

Chicken Feed is the food used to keep your new CS2 pet around while it grows. You can get it through the Weekly Care Package, and letting your food supply run out can cause your chicken to leave permanently.

So yes, Counter-Strike basically has a Tamagotchi now.

Here’s exactly how Chicken Feed works, how to get it and what you need to watch out for.

What Is Chicken Feed in CS2?

Chicken Feed is a new pet-related item connected to the CS2 Chicken Egg system that appeared following the September 22 Rush Hour update.

Its purpose is simple:

Chicken Feed keeps your pet chicken fed so it can remain with you and continue progressing through its life stages.

The game tracks how much food your pet has left and can warn you when the supply is getting low.

This is completely separate from normal CS2 weapon skins, cases and other inventory items.

If you haven’t received a pet yet, our CS2 Chicken Egg guide explains how the entire system starts.

How Do You Get Chicken Feed in CS2?

Chicken Feed can appear in your Weekly Care Package.

To get a Weekly Care Package, you need Prime Status and need to gain a Profile Rank during the current reward week.

The process is basically:

  1. Play CS2 and earn XP.
  2. Gain your weekly Profile Rank.
  3. Open your Weekly Care Package.
  4. Check whether Chicken Feed appears as one of your available rewards.
  5. Select it if your pet needs food.

There is an important catch.

Choosing Chicken Feed uses both of your Weekly Care Package reward selections, similar to selecting a Chicken Egg.

That means you may have to choose between keeping your chicken fed and taking the normal cases, skins or other rewards offered that week.

If you’re not sure when your next package becomes available, our CS2 Weekly Drop Reset guide explains when the reward week resets.

You can also read our CS2 Weekly Drop Chances guide for more information about how normal weekly rewards work.

What Happens If Your CS2 Chicken Runs Out of Food?

This is the part you probably don’t want to test yourself.

If your Chicken Feed supply runs out, your pet can leave permanently.

The system includes warnings when your chicken starts running low on food, giving you time to try to get more through an upcoming Weekly Care Package.

Running out of food can matter even before your chicken fully grows.

An unfed Chicken Egg can fail to reach the point where it hatches, while later-stage chickens can also leave if their food supply expires.

In other words, getting the Chicken Egg is only the beginning.

You actually have to keep an eye on it.

Does Chicken Feed Help Your Chicken Grow?

Chicken Feed is tied to keeping your pet alive while it progresses through the chicken growth system.

The known stages are:

Egg → Chick → Pullet → Hen

Your pet progresses over time rather than by simply dumping food into it immediately.

The important part is making sure its food supply lasts long enough for that progression to continue. The game can warn you if the available food is expected to run out before your pet reaches its next stage.

Once your chicken grows, things get much more interesting because there are multiple breeds and colors it can develop into.

We have all of those documented in our CS2 Chicken Skins guide, including the Catalana, Silkie and Polish breeds.

How Long Does Chicken Feed Last?

This is one detail players should be careful with right now.

There are multiple Chicken Feed assets and bag sizes connected to the pet system, but there is not yet a reliable universal number you should use for exactly how many days every Chicken Feed reward will last.

Instead of relying on a number somebody posts online, check your pet interface.

CS2 tracks your pet’s current food status and warns you when it is running low.

That is much safer than assuming you have another week left and finding out you don’t.

Can You Buy Chicken Feed in CS2?

Currently, no.

Chicken Feed is not a normal Steam Community Market item.

You cannot simply buy another bag from another player when your chicken gets hungry.

Chicken Feed, Chicken Eggs and the pets themselves are currently treated as non-tradable parts of the pet system.

That makes your Weekly Care Packages much more important once you own a chicken.

Before the pet system, skipping a weekly rank-up might only mean missing a potential case or skin.

Now your chicken could also be waiting for food.

Is Chicken Feed Tradable or Sellable?

No.

At the moment, CS2 Chicken Feed cannot be traded or sold through the Steam Community Market.

That also means there is no real Chicken Feed market price to track.

This is very different from normal CS2 cosmetics, where factors such as skin rarity, float and wear and pattern index can affect the value of an item.

Chicken Feed is a utility item for your pet rather than a traditional CS2 skin.

Does Chicken Feed Change Your Chicken Skin?

There is currently no evidence that feeding your pet a certain type or amount of Chicken Feed lets you choose its breed or color.

Chicken appearance is part of the separate pet variation system.

So feeding your chicken is about keeping it around… not turning it into a specific Pink Polish or another rare-looking variant.
