If you opened your CS2 Weekly Care Package and suddenly saw a Chicken Egg, no, your game isn’t bugged.
Valve quietly added a new chicken pet system to Counter-Strike 2 with the September 22, 2026 update.
The weird part? Valve didn’t actually mention it in the official patch notes.
Players started discovering Chicken Eggs in their weekly rewards almost immediately after the update, and the egg appears to be the starting point for a pet chicken that you can hatch, raise and eventually bring into parts of CS2.
Here’s what we know so far.
Quick answer: The CS2 Chicken Egg is a new Weekly Care Package reward that eventually hatches into a pet chicken. Choosing the egg uses both of your weekly reward selections. The egg and pet are currently untradeable, and current game data indicates the egg takes roughly one week to hatch.
What Is the Chicken Egg in CS2?
The Chicken Egg is a new CS2 item introduced alongside the September 22 Rush Hour update.
Instead of being a weapon skin, case or graffiti, it begins a completely different progression system.
You start with an egg.
The egg hatches into a chick.
The chick grows.
Eventually, you end up with your own adult chicken.
Basically, Valve put a tiny chicken-raising game inside Counter-Strike.
Chickens obviously aren’t new to CS. They have been running around maps for years. What is new is actually owning and raising one as a pet.
And judging by how many players are currently searching for “CS2 chicken egg,” Valve hiding this from the patch notes may have made people even more curious.
How to Get a Chicken Egg in CS2
Right now, Chicken Eggs can appear through the Weekly Care Package.
The process works like this:
- Make sure you have CS2 Prime Status.
- Play official CS2 matches and earn XP.
- Gain one Profile Rank after the weekly reset.
- Open your Weekly Care Package.
- If a Chicken Egg appears, select it to claim it.
There is one important catch.
The Chicken Egg consumes both of your weekly reward selections.
Normally, you can choose two rewards from your Weekly Care Package.
If you pick the egg, that is your reward for the week.
So don’t click it thinking you’re also getting your case or skin.

Does Everyone Get a CS2 Chicken Egg?
No.
Getting your weekly drop does not automatically mean you will see a Chicken Egg.
It appears to be another possible Weekly Care Package reward, so some players are getting one immediately while others are opening their weekly rewards and not seeing an egg at all.
Valve has not published the Chicken Egg drop rate.
That means any exact percentage being shared right now should be taken with a huge grain of salt.
This is also why we wouldn’t try comparing its odds to normal skins, cases or other Weekly Care Package rewards yet.

How Do You Hatch the Chicken Egg in CS2?
Once you claim the egg, it appears alongside your character in the CS2 menu.
Then you wait.
Current game data and the egg’s timer indicate that it takes around one week to hatch.
There is an important detail here that some guides are skipping.
The update only released on September 22.
As of September 23, nobody could have received an egg normally and then waited an entire week for its natural hatch timer to finish.
So while the game’s files, animations and timer give us a very good idea of what happens next, we’re keeping naturally observed gameplay separate from information found through the game data.
We’ll update this guide as players complete the full process normally.
How to Get a Pet Chicken in CS2
The CS2 Chicken Egg is how you get a pet chicken. After claiming the egg from your Weekly Care Package, it appears beside your agent on the main menu and begins its hatch timer.
From there, the pet appears to progress through four main stages:

| Hen | Your chicken reaches its fully grown stage |
This isn’t just a static inventory item either.
Game data and early demonstrations show systems for interacting with your chicken, naming it, taking photos and recording its progress.
There is even a HatchBook-style collection system connected to the pets.
For Counter-Strike, this is pretty different from the usual skin, charm and sticker cosmetics.
Do CS2 Chickens Have Different Skins?
Yes.
This is where the system gets a lot more interesting.
Files from the update contain multiple chicken breeds and dozens of different color variations.
The three adult breeds currently identified are:
Catalana
Silkie
Polish
Different chickens can also have different colors and patterns.
You may have already seen screenshots going around of blue, green, red, purple and other unusual-looking chickens.
However, there is a lot of bad information spreading about this already.
Different databases are counting the available colors slightly differently because some variants exist in the game files but may not actually be obtainable yet.
So we wouldn’t call an exact number of chicken skins confirmed just yet.
The same goes for rarity.
Some colors may eventually be much harder to get than others, but Valve has not published official Chicken Egg rarity odds.
If CS2’s normal cosmetic economy has taught us anything, players will figure out which versions are rare pretty quickly.
But on day one, don’t assume somebody calling their chicken a “1% drop” actually knows the odds.

What Is Chicken Feed in CS2?
Your chicken doesn’t just hatch and live forever without you doing anything.
The game also contains Chicken Feed.
Current information in the game files indicates that Chicken Feed can appear through Weekly Care Packages and is used to keep your pet fed while it grows.
That creates an interesting loop.
You don’t just unlock the chicken once.
You may need to continue checking your weekly rewards to keep it around.
The game even contains messages warning players when their pet is running low on food.
According to the current pet data, letting the food run out can cause your chicken to leave.
So yes, CS2 basically has a Tamagotchi now.
Can You Sell the CS2 Chicken Egg?
At launch, no.
Chicken Eggs are currently untradeable and cannot be sold through the Steam Community Market.
The same restrictions currently appear to apply to the pet system itself.
That means there isn’t a real “CS2 Chicken Egg price” right now.
If you see someone claiming their egg is worth $100, $500 or some ridiculous amount because it is “rare,” there is currently no open Steam market supporting that price.
Could Valve change the system later?
Of course.
CS2 changes constantly.
But we wouldn’t buy into speculation about tradeable chickens until Valve actually enables it.

Is the CS2 Chicken Egg Worth Choosing?
This really depends on why you care about your weekly drop.
If you’re interested in the new chicken system and want to raise one, the egg is currently the way to start.
If you only care about getting an item you can immediately sell or trade, the situation is different.
The Chicken Egg currently:
uses both weekly rewards
cannot be sold
cannot be traded
needs time to hatch
So you’re giving up your normal weekly choices to try a brand-new pet system.
Personally, that’s probably why the decision is interesting.
A case might have an obvious market price.
The Chicken Egg doesn’t.
You’re choosing the new feature rather than the immediate value of a normal drop.
